ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy is undergoing a major cast shake-up. The series has introduced a new class of residents while Ellen Pompeo’s title character Meredith Grey is departing after an impressive 19-season stint. But for every long-running Grey’s Anatomy character, there’s another whose tenure doesn’t last nearly as long.
One such example is Dr. Stephanie Edwards, portrayed by Jerrika Hinton. The character was introduced during Season 9 as a recurring player before being promoted to the main cast in Season 10. She left the show in Season 13, and while four-plus seasons is a good run for most actors, it’s fairly short by Grey’s Anatomy standards. So what happened to Stephanie, and why did Jerrika Hinton leave Grey’s Anatomy?
Updated on April 18, 2024 by Katie Doll: Coming off an immense tragedy in the Season 8 finale, fresh faces were more than welcomed in the Season 9 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy. Dr. Stephanie Edwards was the most dynamic intern to join the team and her four-season arc was full of ups and downs. Viewers were saddened when she left the series, leaving them to wonder if there was a behind-the-scenes reason for her exit. This article has been updated to expand on Stephanie’s biography, and more clarification on Hinton’s leave and her career after the medical drama.
Who Was Dr. Stephanie Edwards On Grey’s Anatomy?

Dr. Stephanie Edwards first appeared in the Season 9 premiere, “Going, Going, Gone,” as an intern. She began her internship at the then-named Seattle Grace Mercy West after Grey’s Anatomy‘s infamous plane crash. Stephanie became interested in the medical field because she was diagnosed with sickle-cell disease and spent most of her childhood in treatment. Her appearance marked the appearance of the second set of interns on Grey’s Anatomy, since Lexi’s class of Meredith and her colleagues has just been promoted to attendings.
Among her class, Stephanie was one of the best-received interns by both fans and her attendings. Cristina Yang herself said Stephanie was among the most talented in her class, which any Grey’s Anatomy fans know is a rare compliment by Cristina. Stephanie also gained attention when she covered for Dr. Miranda Bailey in Season 10 (the same season she became a series regular) after Bailey had performed a procedure without consent.
Stephanie bounced between cardiology and neurosurgery as her primary specialty but ultimately chose the latter, and started to shadow Amelia Shepherd. She’s tasked with assisting Amelia with removing Nicole Herman’s impossible tumor, which they were successful in, but left Herman blind. Grey’s Anatomy is also known for exploiting its doctors’ romantic lives, which includes Stephanie. She had a brief relationship with Jackson Avery until they broke up, and then started a relationship with a patient, Kyle. The romance with Kyle was very similar to that of Izzie Stevens and Denny Duquette back in Season 2, so Stephanie was kicked off the case before she made bad judgments. Unfortunately, Amelia was unable to save him in surgery.
Stephanie Edwards Had An Explosive Ending On Grey’s Anatomy

Season 13 was a disastrous era for Stephanie. Her biggest rival, Leah, returned and it infuriated Stephanie. The two previously fought in an earlier season over a spot on Cristina’s service, which led to Leah nearly killing a patient by hooking their oxygen to her IV. The incident got Leah kicked out of the program, so seeing her back at Grey Sloan made Stephanie believe mistakes didn’t have consequences. She bottled up her anger which was ultimately released on a patient’s parents, who proclaimed that Stephanie was being sent to hell for going against their wishes. She threw a tablet at them and was sent to therapy.
Before finishing her therapy sessions, Stephanie is held hostage by a criminal patient who demanded to leave the hospital. She nearly escaped with a little girl by lighting him on fire. Unfortunately, when the man came too close to flammable materials, he caused an explosion that caused Stephanie to suffer significant burns. The Season 13 finale was her last episode, in which she quit her job and decided to travel the world after her potentially fatal experience.
The Possible Factors Behind Jerrika Hinton’s Grey’s Anatomy Departure

While Jerrika Hinton’s time on Grey’s Anatomy wasn’t incredibly long, she had a literally explosive exit from the series because the actress wanted to “try something new creatively,” according to series creator Shonda Rhimes in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Hinton added that when her role on a new Shondaland series, Toast, didn’t work out, she was inspired to venture outside of Grey’s Anatomy. Another report from Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Hinton had been cast as a series regular in Here and Now, an HBO drama from Alan Ball, but that series only lasted one season.
More recently, Lynette Rice’s book How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy claims that a “rumor persisted” about tensions between Hinton and Ellen Pompeo. The rumor claimed that Hinton was asked to leave the show because she didn’t get Pompeo’s permission to take Polaroids on set. But then again, these are only speculations that many fans believe as only gossip. According to Insider, Hinton did not speak to Rice for the book; her only official word about her exit was back in 2017 when she said that leaving was “my own choice.”
Whatever the reason for her departure, Hinton hasn’t been seen on the show since, and with Stephanie’s storylines pretty well tied up at the end of Season 13, it’s unlikely the character would make a comeback anyway. But Grey’s Anatomy always finds a way to bring characters back, even if they have gone into the afterlife. Both Derek Shepherd and George O’Malley made appearances during the show’s COVID-19 storyline in Meredith’s dreams.
Season 20 saw the return of Jessica Capshaw’s Arizona Robbins, who nobody thought would return. Even Pompeo herself can’t stay away from Grey’s Anatomy, despite so many confirmed reports that she would be permanently leaving the show. On Grey’s Anatomy, anything is possible, especially if the show needs a hit of nostalgia to reel viewers back in.
Jerrika Hinton’s Post-Grey’s Anatomy Career

Although Toast and Here and Now didn’t work out for Hinton after Grey’s Anatomy, she still found success with other networks and streaming services. Before Grey’s Anatomy, she had small parts in Gilmore Girls, Everybody Hates Chris, Gossip Girl, and Scandal, the latter of which is another Shondaland series.
Her most notable role since Grey’s Anatomy was as Natalie Gorman in Seasons 1 and 2 of Apple TV+’s Servant. Her character was an unlicensed kinesthesiologist trying to help Dorothy Turner through the trauma of losing her baby. She gave the family a “reborn doll” to help them cope, which eventually was reborn as an actual baby.
Hinton also starred in Amazon Prime Video’s Hunters from 2020-2023, which followed a set of Nazi hunters uncovering a plot to create a Fourth Reich in the United States. Hinton played an FBI Agent who comes across the Fourth Reich and the Hunters trying to stop it, and played alongside Al Pacino and Logan Lerman. She also has a role in the upcoming film The Piano Lesson, which will feature John David Washington, Ray Fisher, and Samuel L. Jackson.
